So, my 11 year-old son brings home a note from school last night… it seems his 5th grade girlfriend has strayed… I wrote a response for him but I don’t think he’ll want to use it.  You decide!  What tops it all off is that my son really didn’t even realize he was “dating” this girl!
Dearest Cameron,
I pray that the unparalleled sense of heartbreak I feel will subside as the years go by.  I will spend countless sleepless hours thinking about what could have been… those awkward and embarrassing feelings amongst my friends when they pry it out of me that I actually have a girlfriend, the dates that an 11 year old is years away from actually having, the passion of the stolen glance across the elementary school hallway while on our way to the cafeteria and the continual questioning of your friends about whether or not I like you.  I sincerely hope that Lance will be able to fulfill your need for an elementary school love affair and if you ever need me, I’ll be here; riding my unicycle alone with tears in my eyes.  I’m hopeful that the passage of time will assuage my heartache and I wish you every success in achieving the affection you so desire.
To quote Alfred Lord Tennyson.
“I hold it true, whate’er befall;I feel it, when I sorrow most;‘Tis better to have loved and lostThan never to have loved at all.”
With a love that will echo throughout the ages,
I remain,
Nathan
